Welcome to BayouTeche.com, St. Mary Parish's newest internet/community service. Our goal is to bring together businesses and consumers of the St. Mary Parish area. Enclosed you will find links to web pages for local businesses, people you see everyday, neighbors, friends! We a very close knit community, that's why we support each other and call this area home.
A little about the Parish: St. Mary Parish was formed in 1811, in the area where the Atchafalaya River meets the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway and runs westward and ends near Jeanerette The original settlers, at the end of the 18th century raised cattle later to grow sugar cane on the vast plantations located in and around Franklin, the parish seat. The majority of these are located on the banks of the Bayou Teche which runs 46 mile length of the parish.
The areas economy is based on the petroleum products industry. In the late 18th century the Atchafalaya River was dredged enabling Morgan City to be launched as a port city thus opening the area to outside influence. In 1914 oil wells were drilled on Avoca Island but it wasn't until 1946 when oil was struck by an experimental offshore rig and the oil boom truly began! Today that same rig, the Mr. Charlie, is located River side where the train bridge crosses into Morgan City. It is used today as a training facility for oil companies to give their employees a hands on experience to life on an offshore oil platform. Tours to the general Public are also given, Monday - Saturday.
Today oil is still king but our roots are deep within the people of this area. An area of diverse interests and activities, a place where you can hunt, fish or enjoy countless other outdoor activities year-round. A place we call home!
